Why We Use Calcium Carbonate Instead of Charcoal

Why We Use Calcium Carbonate Instead of Charcoal

If you've been following aftergum® for a while, you might have noticed something different about our formula. We made the decision to replace activated charcoal with Calcium Carbonate, and we want to be completely transparent about why.

It wasn't a trend decision. It was a science decision.

The Problem With Activated Charcoal

Activated charcoal became a huge trend in the oral care space over the past few years. Charcoal toothpastes, charcoal whitening powders, charcoal everything. And we get it. The idea of a natural ingredient that "absorbs" stains sounds appealing.

But as more research emerged, the picture became more complicated. The American Dental Association has not given its Seal of Acceptance to any charcoal-based dental product. Some dental professionals have raised concerns that activated charcoal may be too abrasive for daily use, potentially wearing down enamel over time rather than protecting it.

As a dentist-founded brand, we take that seriously. If the science doesn't fully support an ingredient, we're not comfortable keeping it in our formula.

Why Calcium Carbonate?

Calcium Carbonate is one of the most widely used and well-studied ingredients in oral care. You'll find it in many trusted toothpastes and dental products around the world. Here's why we chose it.

It's a gentle, effective cleanser. Calcium Carbonate is a mild abrasive, which means it can help clean and polish tooth surfaces without the risk of being too harsh on your enamel. It's the kind of ingredient that does the job without overdoing it.

It's naturally occurring. Calcium Carbonate is found in nature, in everything from limestone to eggshells. It's not synthetic. It's not a lab experiment. It's a mineral that's been used in oral care for decades.

It's dentist-approved. Unlike activated charcoal, Calcium Carbonate has a long track record of use in dental products and is widely recognized by oral health professionals as safe and effective for everyday use.

What This Means for You

If you loved the original aftergum®, you're going to love the new formula even more. The switch to Calcium Carbonate means you're getting a cleaner, more effective ingredient that's backed by decades of dental research.

Everything else you love about aftergum® is still the same. Hydroxyapatite for enamel support. Xylitol to help fight bacteria. MCT Oil for that fresh, clean feeling. Zero sugar. Zero calories. Zero aspartame. 100% Vegan.

We just made the core even better.

Our Commitment

At aftergum®, we don't follow trends. We follow the science. I personally formulated this gum to help people enjoy their coffee and tea without worrying about their smile. And that means constantly evaluating our ingredients and making changes when the evidence calls for it.

Switching from charcoal to Calcium Carbonate wasn't easy. It took time, testing, and a lot of late nights getting the formula just right. But we believe it's the right call for your smile, and that's what matters most.
